Abilities Tennis of NC in Asheville
A collaboration between APR, Abilities Tennis, and the Asheville Tennis Association. Learn tennis basics and practice your skills on the court! Facilitated by an ATA tennis professional, this 4-week course is open to individuals with intellectual disabilities, ages 8+.
Location: Omni Grove Park (290 Macon Avenue)
Dates: Saturdays March 1, 8, 15, 22
Time: 1:00pm-2:00pm

Round-Robin Tennis Tournament for Abilities Tennis Players
Held each June at Lake Junaluska
Singles or Doubles – will be determined depending on number of participants.
Skills Court for players with limited experience to receive special instruction and individualized attention.

Special Olympics was founded by Eunice Kennedy in 1968 to inspire changing attitudes about the talents of people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Buncombe County provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for youth and adults. Sports include alpine skiing and snowboarding, aquatics, athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, cheerleading, gymnastics, powerlifting, tennis, and soccer. We are a volunteer based organization with zero overhead cost. All money raised goes directly to our athletes. Special Olympics never charges the athletes or families to participate in our program.
Wheel Serve Asheville
The Asheville Tennis Association was proud to introduce Wheel Serve Asheville in May 2021, a wheelchair tennis program serving all ages with a physical disability. We welcome all skill levels from beginner to advanced. We will provide all tennis and adaptive equipment necessary to play if you do not have your own. We just need YOU!

Mountain Xpress March 2024: Adaptive sports serve youths with special needs - On Saturdays in the spring and fall, an Omni Grove Park Inn tennis pro leads an adaptive sports clinic for children as well as adults. They practice groundstrokes, volleys and overheads in a low-stakes setting. The Asheville Tennis Association partners with Abilities Tennis of North Carolina to sponsor the program; sessions are free……Another program called Wheel Serve, which is based out of Charlotte, has been made possible by the Asheville Tennis Association at the Asheville Racquet Club since 2021. Past Asheville Tennis Association President Debbie Southern says the group was able to purchase sport wheelchairs — four for adults and one for a child, thanks to a $5,000 grant from Mission Hospital.
